09.18.09: Riding into the sunset …

This monument is reportedly the first attempt in the United States to produce a granite equestrian. The 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry actively participated in the Gettysburg Campaign, but it did not fight there. Its monument is located near the Pennsylvania Monument in an area set off for regiments that participated in the campaign but did not actually fight on the Gettysburg battlefield.

09.16.09: Splendiferous Sunset behind a Living Landmark.

This walnut tree has suffered several lightning strikes and several of the limbs are dying, and so every time I come to the field, I wonder if it will still be standing. But it endures as it has for over 145 years — a silent witness to one of the most momentous scenes in American history. It was a privilege to enjoy one of the best sunsets I’ve seen at Gettysburg and to photograph the display of beautiful colors behind this living, fragile landmark.
